Frequently Asked Questions

What if my pet fails the blood test

Your pet will need to be re-vaccinated and blood tested as before.  The 6 month waiting period will apply from the revised blood testing date.  The usual fees will apply.

What is the procedure in the following years?

To maintain immunity rabies booster vaccinations are required every two years.  If the booster vaccinations are given in time then no further blood testing is required.  If the booster is given outside the required interval then a further blood test will be required.

Is there a Travel Insurance Policy for pets using the scheme?

Pet Plan has launched a travel policy to cover emergency vet fees, third party liability and many other benefits, for dogs and cats travelling in the European Union and other countries designated rabies free.  Cover is available for periods of travel up to 90 days.   For up to date costs and more information contact Pet Plan on 0800 037 4950 , quoting ref  3033.  Leaflets are available in our surgeries and there is more information on the insurance page.

Do I need any other health certificates?

You may require other health certificates in addition to the PETS passport to enable you to enter or travel through certain countries with your pet.  DEFRA will be able to advise you on what is required.
